My short little pep-talk this week is brought to you by a quote that I recently heard. In the past two weeks, I have jumped head first into a few new ventures, all on top of raising a family, my photography business, this blog, a YouTube channel, and…. well a few exciting things to come! I am the type of person that lives life with a full plate, I simply can’t help it. And it also helps that I genuinely enjoy the work that I do.
With that being said, a quote was recently shared with me that I find so impactful that I had to share it.
“If you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late.”
-Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn
The way I have walked around repeating this quote for weeks on end now is sickening, but it’s because it’s true! If you wait until you have the perfect idea, the perfect pitch, the perfect execution, you will likely never begin. Or it will already be too late. Someone else will have launched. The trend or fad will have passed. Someone else will be two steps ahead.
When I talk with others about business or potential ideas in their head, my immediate response is, “DO IT!” And by do it, I mean yesterday. There is no perfect timing for anything in life. You will always find an excuse out of doing something if you want to. So my mindset is always to just launch. Just do it. Go for it. And pivot along the way. The best way to learn is from mistakes. Be okay with the imperfections. Be okay with failing in order to better yourself. Be okay with learning along the way.
- Wanting to offer exercise classes, but don’t have your own space? RENT ONE and GO! Charge enough to cover the expenses, plus profit.
- Wanting to write a book? START WRITING! Have friends proofread it as you go, little by little. Along the way, research the publication process and how to go about it.
- Wanting to create your own app? DO IT! There are many free sites that code and create for you. Do it and launch it already, change it as you go.
- Wanting to start your own photography business? Start asking your friends to model for you! Navigate the camera, take some photos, and play around with editing. Start snapping away!
Regardless of what it is you want to do, you have to simply just do it! Be okay with walking to the finish line and taking detours along the way, not racing for it!
