Kicking It Back To Business: 6 Doable Business Ideas for Moms

All the time, I hear other Moms telling me that they are inspired by my work. How they would love to start a business of their own that would give them the flexibility to raise their babies. The number one thing that stops them: not knowing what to do.

So, today, I’m hitting you with a few different business ideas that anybody can do! I’m not saying these may be your passion, at least not yet, but these are all options that anyone could try out with minimal experience or start up costs!

Options With No Start-Up Costs

Social Media Management/Content Creation

Given today’s world of business, this is a huge field in need. Gone are the days of t.v. commercials, billboards, flyers door to door- most companies advertise through social media. Learning how to manage a social media account and/or create content for business is a service in demand.

While content creation requires you to have a knowledge of editing apps, an eye for design, and at times, keeping up to date with recent trends, this is truly an accessible job for most. A content creators role entails creating posts, reels, stories, short form videos, etc. for businesses to use on their social media platforms. Social media management requires a bit more knowledge on the ins and outs of social media marketing- best times to post, the overall management of an account, how to boost engagement, ideas for posts, stories, reels, etc., knowing how to organically grow on a platform, how to market to attract clientele, etc. There are many online courses where you can gain an accredited degree in digital marketing and further knowledge in these areas.

Etsy Storefront for Digital Products

Another option for the creative Mama is an online Etsy store for digital products. If you are a Canva guru, creating things like editable PDF files for cards, Cricuit designs, travel checklists for Moms, etc. the possibilities are endless. The key here is designing digital products to eliminate the amount of work on your end. A digital product can be created one time and sold hundreds of times. You can automate a self-delivery and there’s not much more you need to do after that.

Party Decor Business

A party decor business can be minimal to no-cost to start up if you already have a few different items: Cricuit machine, air pump, and/or Canva subscription. You can create and sell themed birthday banners, create themed goodie bags, learn the trade of balloon arches, etc. When giving a price to clients, be sure to account for the cost of services and materials. This makes this option low cost in start-up.

If you get to be really good and passionate, a business like this can ultimately lead to larger party planning. You can help clients curate their theme, design mood-boards/look books, create shopping lists for clients, provided set-up and break-down, time-lining, etc.

Options With Some Start-Up Costs

Learn a Skillset: Embroidery, Photography, Editing Softwares, etc.

There are options to rent equipment of all sorts. Learn to embroider. Pick up a camera. Learn an editing software. Put in the time to learn a new skillset and make something of it. Everybody starts somewhere- there’s no reason to be perfect at the craft before you start. The more you immerse yourself in the skillset, the quicker you will catch on.

Licensed Zumba or Yoga Instructor

The start up costs to gaining a specified certificate can vary among programs. The time commitment for training can also vary. But gaining a certificate as a licensed instructor of sorts, such as a Zumba instructor or Yoga instructor, is another flexible option for Moms. If you go the route of finding a space to host your own classes, you can not only set class times around your schedule but dictate the price of the class as well. Long term, what’s even better is if you gain access to your own studio space and rent it out for others to use. Doubling up on your business.

Photo-booth Rental Company

This might be the largest start-up cost, however, if marketed well, can provide the quickest return. You can purchase a photo-booth through many different companies (or on Facebook marketplace!). Depending on the type you purchase you may need further equipment: an iPad, printer, props, etc. Start a social media page and get the word spread about your photo-booth rental. Photo-booths are still a big hit at weddings, birthday parties, corporate events, etc.
