When summer first began, I created a routine for us to follow each day and it has been a game changer! If your kids are anything like ours, the immediate second their eyes open in the morning, they are asking (or in our household, just doing it themselves) for their iPads, the television, video-games, etc. And can we blame them? Most days, my phone is the first thing I grab when I wake up in the morning.
Technology has become a part of our everyday lives, whether we like it or not. And it’s bound to be a part of our children’s lives as well. But I knew I could not live the entire summer with them spending every waking second on their devices. Their behaviors are terrible, they become zombies, it’s an argument getting them to do anything other than. So I decided with a summer routine, it would give me the space to limit and set the expectation of exactly when technology would be a part of our days.

Our daily routine looks like this ➡️
Notice, there are no times for anything. I did not want to restrict our day to day to specific times. It also eliminated any arguments from my time-telling children. There’s no skipping something because we slept in too late. There’s no pressure to rush through anything to ensure we get to the next one. It’s simply an order in which we do things throughout the day.
And if you’re a WFHM like myself, that outside time and the naps/tech time is usually when I squeeze in a bit of work!
The kids are honestly thriving off of this. They’ve become so routined to it that not one of them wake up even asking for the technology in the mornings. Most of the time, they’re in the backyard in their pajamas waiting for breakfast to be ready. On the plane ride home from our trip to Las Vegas, Jaxon actually said to me, “back to our schedule tomorrow!”
Kids thrive off of routine and structure and in order to keep myself sane at home with all these dang kids, routine and structure was going to be key. On top of a daily routine, I knew that would become redundant and too repetitive for the kids. So two times each week, we aim to get out of the house as well. And thankfully, this routine has been a saving grace! We still have our hiccups, the kids still fight on a daily basis, there’s days I’m driven to the brink of insanity, but overall, this has really helped all of us know what to expect of one another.
What’s your summer schedule looking like? Do you have the kids home or at camp? Tell me how you’re surviving the days below! ☀️
