Placenta Encapsulation: What is it? And How Did I Come to this Decision?

During my first pregnancy, I read about everything. Every last detail of pregnancy and how it all works. I was absolutely fascinated by it all. By the time I was pregnant the second time around, I had heard small bits about placenta research and how consuming it postpartum had benefits (Hello Kourtney Kardashian! Who could forget that epic scene?)

I remember questioning my doctor at some point about how to have my placenta released to me and it did not seem like an easy process. She seemed hesitant and unsure of my motives. This pregnancy, I was determined to figure out how to get my placenta out the door with me!

What is Placenta Encapsulation?

Placenta encapsulation is the process of dehydrating the placenta and grounding the matter into pill form to be consumed by the mother postpartum.

I went through Mommy Made Encapsulation who made the process so quick and easy! From the moment of contact to the moment of drop off, everything was straight forward, easy to understand, and felt extremely empowering. This time around I had all the exact information to give my doctor in order to have my placenta taken with me (or with Mommy Made Encapsulation, rather!).

I reached out to Mommy Made Encapsulation who took an initial deposit. From there, it was a waiting game for baby’s arrival. Once we arrived at the hospital, I contacted them via text to let them know I was in labor. When in labor, Mommy Made Encapsulation is on call for you 24/7. I asked my nurse immediately for the placenta release form and ensured them arrangements were made for the placenta to be picked up for encapsulation. After birth, the hospital placed my placenta in a to-go container (I’m kidding- but it really did look like a plastic food container) and we placed it in a cooler surrounded by ice. Mommy Made Encapsulation dispatched someone out to pick up my placenta and they did their thing! The delivered my capsules two days later!

Why Choose Placenta Encapsulation?

I have many reasons why I wanted to move forward with placenta encapsulation this time around. One of the biggest reasons is all of the benefits! During pregnancy, the placenta takes over a large roll in hormone production and release. After birth, when the placenta is removed, this causes a HUGE crash in hormones within the mother’s body. That hormone imbalance can cause many postpartum factors/challenges.

The idea with placenta encapsulation is instead of experiencing that crash in hormones, you gradually decrease the hormones within the body, lessening that ‘crash’.

Some of the benefits to this are:

  • Better balanced hormones and mood regulation
  • Lesser chances of baby blues/postpartum depression
  • Higher energy levels
  • Increased milk supply
  • Higher iron levels
  • Assists in the uterus returning back to pre-pregnancy size quicker
  • Losing baby weight faster
  • And so on!

I mean, if those benefits alone don’t sell you on this, I don’t know what will!

In addition to that, another major reason I wanted to opt for a placenta release is a strong opinion of my own. And to keep things short and sweet, hopefully to intrigue your own research doing, I whole-heartedly wish our health care system did more with umbilical cords and placentas than they do.

Currently, most hospitals dispose of these organs as hazardous material. Personally, I feel our healthcare system is significantly underutilizing these organs and there is heavy research out there that supports the benefits of newborn stem cells and all of the good they can do in curing illness, diseases, etc. And while storing these cells away is an option for future use, the costs are wildly expensive long term.

So for myself, I simply could not let another placenta of mine go to waste. Seriously.

Does it Work?

While I am only 3 days into my pills, I can already feel a difference in my recovery this time around. I feel very energized, which is saying something considering newborn life plus three other kids! My postnatal bleeding is already very minimal, my uterus is certainly decreasing in size more and more by the day, no baby blues this time, and my mood regulation feels well balanced. Those are a few areas I struggled with after my last pregnancy right out of the gate, so I am happy with the results so far!

If you have ever been curious or interested in placenta encapsulation, I say do it! Give it a try and see how you like it! And without a doubt- Mommy Made Encapsulation is who to use!

Footnote: I am and have always been a skinny bitch by genetics! NEVER compare your postpartum look to anyone else’s. I am simply showing that I have noticed my personal uterus returning back down to size very quickly and clearly my milk has had NO issues coming in. Both benefits of placenta encapsulation and this has not been my experience in three other pregnancies!
