Hey, all my lovely Mama’s and Mama’s-to-be! Remember your first pregnancy appointment? Whether you’re stepping into motherhood for the first time or, like me, gearing up for baby number four, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions.

I remember feeling SO overwhelmed yet exhilarated, clutching my doctor’s pamphlets and devouring every Pinterest guide I could possibly get my hands on.

Pregnancy is an incredible, ethereal, exhausting experience of nurturing a new life and rediscovering your own strength as a person. Sometimes we’re so focused on the baby-to-be that we forget about nurturing ourselves too. Let’s talk about all things pregnancy and the path to giving birth to your sweet babe.

Section 1: Health Check: Your Foundation and first steps.

Q: How does my overall health impact my pregnancy, and what should I be aware of?

Mamas, your health is your power during all of this. It’s not just about the physical; it’s about the mental and emotional too. In my third pregnancy, life tossed me some real challenges, contributing to postpartum depression after birth (and actually- it didn’t hit until 6 months following, so keep alert! Postpartum depression can occur anytime in the first year post-birth). It was tough, but it also taught me the importance of speaking up and keeping those communication lines with your healthcare provider buzzing. Your health is the center of your pregnancy – pay attention and prioritize it!

Section 2: Tracking Baby’s Growth: Connecting deeper with your baby and body.

Q: What are effective ways to track my baby’s development throughout the pregnancy?

I absolutely adore apps like Nurture and The Bump – they were my digital allies in connecting with my growing baby. Especially during those long, restless nights (yep, we’ve all been there!), these tools help keep you engaged and excited about the incredible process unfolding inside you. I always found so much comfort in the community forums in the app and the tidbits of “normalcy and what to look out for” tips. Because, phew!, the anxiety that consumes you throughout pregnancy, worrying about all the things and beyond, we all need something to reassure us that everything is alright.

Section 3: Preparing for Delivery: Getting yourself ready through educating yourself on ALL options.

Q: How should we plan for the delivery day, and what options do I have?

Your delivery day is all about the story you create. Talk through your birth plan options with your healthcare provider, and include your support system in this conversation. Understanding your options brings a sense of comfort and ease to your day. And hey, it’s okay to Google ‘what other moms did’ – gathering wisdom is part of your new or seasoned mom superpowers.

Section 4: Post-Delivery: Embracing Change and Growth.

Q: What should I anticipate in terms of recovery and newborn care post-delivery?

The post-delivery phase is a time of immense physical and emotional transformation. Be kind to yourself and remember that all feelings are valid. Just like when my children grew, and I found new layers of my strength, you too will discover new depths of resilience in this phase. Don’t judge yourself, give it time, and take care of yourself. Keep an open line of communication with some you trust, as well as your healthcare providers. Your body takes years to return to it’s pre-pregnancy state, hormones and all, so be sure to share anything that may not feel right.

Section 5: Managing Pregnancy Complications: Preparedness is Power.

Q: What is the protocol for managing complications if they arise?

Always be prepared, even for the unexpected. My first baby’s NICU stay taught me the power of preparedness. Understanding the possible complications and emergency protocols prepares you to face any challenge with confidence. Consider attending childbirth education classes to learn about labor and delivery options, pain management techniques, and newborn care. We did this with our first and I could not be more grateful for it. As I went into early labor at 32 weeks- having taken a few childbirth education classes, I felt like I was able to shift all of my focus on the health and next steps for our son. I did not feel anxious over the unknown of childbirth or what pain was to come. The classes truly helped me feel aware of what was about to occur, so in turn, I was able to focus deeply on safely delivering and making calm, thoughtful choices for our preemie babe. But do keep in mind, birth plans are a guide, not a script. So many things can change at the drop of a dime. Be open to adjustments as needed based on your health and the baby’s well-being.

Section 6: Clear Communication: Your Anchor Through Pregnancy.

Q: How can we maintain effective communication throughout my pregnancy?

Maintain open lines of communication with your healthcare team. No question is too small, I mean that. Your healthcare team is on your side, and along with the community of moms, you’re never alone in this journey. Feeling anxious about giving birth? Other moms get it! Talk to friends, spouses, family, so you don’t feel alone. OB’s and midwives are seasoned vets- look for their guidance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their experience, philosophy, and bedside manner. See if they listen attentively and address your concerns. Your voice deserves to be heard, take your time, and don’t feel rushed when choosing what’s right for you.

Every step of your pregnancy is a chapter in your incredible story of growth, resilience, and transformation. Pregnancy is about more than just becoming a mom; it’s about the continual evolution of you as a woman. Embrace this transformation, take charge of it, and let it highlight the resilience in you!
