Reorganizing Post-Holiday Season: Tips and Tricks

Am I one of those weirdos that finds reorganizing and deep cleaning to be entirely therapeutic? Yes, yes I am. Living within clutter and mess is way too overwhelming for me (but invite me over to your mess all day, won’t bother me one damn bit!). A household of six is already chaotic enough, so when I can’t see the kitchen counter or the family room is filled with toys, my mind becomes a disaster. I lose all ability to focus and get shit done.

Therefore, post-holidays, it’s a no brainer. The house is getting deep cleaned and reorganized. Every last square inch. So today, I’m sharing with you some tips and tricks to reorganizing mess in your household!

1. Vacuum Seal Bags

This is not a new invention of any sort, but is it a new revelation, game-changer in our household? It sure is! I previously mentioned these when we traveled. I used them to fit all six of us into 3 suitcases. But, since reorganizing the household, I have now used it for all of the kids extra sheets, blankets, comforters and have slid that all right under their beds. I wound up freeing up an entire cupboard upstairs that I was originally using for all of our bedding. These are the ones I bought and they work like a charm!

2. Mini Storage Chest from IKEA

We have three of these in our household now and they are genius! We have one in our playroom that is filled with all of the coloring tools the kids would need and want. The other two chests are in both of the kid’s rooms. Taylor has one that organizing all of her Barbie accessories (minus the tiniest of pieces which are currently stored away until Sadie is grown) and the other chest is in the boy’s room filled with Lego pieces. There are so many loose Lego pieces around this house and in their room, so this mini storage chest was the perfect size to store them all in. Mini Storage Chest linked HERE.

3. KALLAX Storage Shelf from IKEA

This is also not a new product of any sort and MANY people own this one. But I SWEAR by it. Spend the money. These units are solidly made and support a ton of crap weight, from crap toys. Literally had a conversation over IG about this unit versus the Target ones. IKEA all the way on this one. Get a KALLAX shelf here.

I also use two different storage baskets in ours. These are nothing more than aesthetically pleasing to me. Rope Basket from Target. Rattan Basket from IKEA.

4. Storage Boxes from Target

The one thing that drives me absolutely insane is cardboard boxes. For toys, for games, anything. They start to wear down and get torn open sideways, never to be securely closed again, with loose pieces falling out the second someone takes it off the shelf the wrong way. And you just hear it. You hear the crash and burn coming. I KNOW YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. So I will replace all beat up boxes with these cheap storage boxes from Target. I also use them to store arts and crafts supplies, all those small Barbie pieces, Lego sets, you name it, they’re good for it. I use a Post-It Note backwards to label the boxes that need it (aka, so Phil knows where to put things away).

5. DONATE and TRASH.

Last but not least, for everything else donate or trash that shit! When I reorganize, if things are missing, if things cannot find a good home, they get donated or sent straight to the trash bin. If the kids have not played with it within the last year, donated or trashed. If we haven’t touched or used something within the past year, donated or trashed. I truly hate clutter and I hate holding on to things that are just taking up space.

This year, after the holidays, we went through all of our toys, gifts, stuffed animals, etc. and decided what could be returned/exchanged at stores, what could be donated to a local children’s hospital, and what could go to the trash bin. The kids actually had a good time sorting through a lot of their things and deciding for themselves. And while donating their items isn’t quite yet a concept they all fully understand (Jaxon is certainly understanding it, but our middle’s are still grasping the concept), it is still something we love instilling in them from the get go.

That’s A Wrap…

And there ya have it! My not-so-award-winning, home decluttering and reorganization tips and tricks. I’m all about making the use of our space in the best ways that we can, all while hiding the mess and junk that we own. Containing, compressing, and scrapping is what my organization is all about!
